Capricorn Caves

The Capricorn Caves are located just north of Rockhampton and a 42 minute drive from Emu Park. The sedimentary rock of the Caves started forming 390 million years ago under the sea from coral reef. Now the above ground limestone caves form huge chambers some with stalactites, rare ferns and up to 5 bat species.

First discovered in 1881 by the Olsen Family, the Augusteyn family took over in 1988 and have developed an advanced ecotourism attraction that conserves and manages the environment of the property.

Visitors can choose from wheel-chair access guided cave tours, wild caving adventures & abseiling.

There is alfresco dining, a licensed bat bar, gift shop specializing in Australian souvenirs and pool for tour guests.

Events in the Caves include:

  • Opera performed by the Underground Opera Company with shows scheduled for late May and early November.
  • Summer solstice light spectacle - due to the summer alignment of the sun over the Tropic of Capricorn, a brilliant beam of light penetrates the darkness of Belfry Cave through a 14m vertical shaft. Available on the Cathedral Cave tour from December to early January.
